Rafael Nadal has won the last 4 French Open tournaments, is the undisputed king of clay, is the #1 player in the world... lost to Soderling yesterday... Unbelievable... akin to Ryan Leaf beating Peyton Manning or some other David/Goliath story... Nadal had won 31 matches in a row at Rolland Garros, 4 straight titles... If you did the math, it means he'd never lost there...

I cant believe Tennis is not more popular than it is... real drama.

But coverage of the French Open here sucks. My husband heard that Nadal was losing before he ever got to watch the match on television because it was tape-delayed. He's watching the Open this morning, but the prime matches on weekends are tape delayed until NBC decides to show it. We paid extra just to get the Tennis Channel - why can't they show matches live and then NBC show then again during "normal" hours?

He was trying to tune out all coverage of the Open, but went to Yahoo! and saw the headline about Nadal. As you mentioned, tennis is just not that popular, and so he was surprised to see anything. And it ruined the match for him.

it does suck... I have noticed that Tennis channel is showing live coverage in the mornings until about 1:00, then espn takes over and shows it again on tape delay... much the same way that USA and NBC used to show the other slams.

It sucks that the big networks get exclusive rights to show the high profile matches, but then dont bother to carry them live... granted a 6 hour timezone offset is a bit difficult to overcome, but only tennis fans watch tennis, and I'm pretty sure that most would want to see it live...

I hope Roger gets it this year... he deserves it... such a class guy, I would hate to see his career end without the French Open title.

Would that give Federer the Grand Slam if he won it? I am sort of sentimental in that I'm thrilled Agassi was the last one to achieve that. (granted, not all in one year.)

I suppose if Federer did win the Slam, it would be that much poetic as I think Agassi is giving out the trophies this year.

It would, yes... Federer lacks only the FO title... Nadal beat him in the final 3 of the last 4 years, in the semi-final the other year.
