Notre Dame football

Post  Markwes on Thu Dec 10, 2009 9:10 pm

Brian Kelly is the new ND coach. Interesting choice, especially given the outcry over a pro-choice president being invited to speak. And the university thinks there won't be any outcry over a supposedly pro-choice football coach? And I'm trying to figure out how someone can leave an undefeated school (Cincinnati) right before maybe the school's biggest bowl game ever (I really don't know but I can't recall the Bearcats having a great football team). I understand Notre Dame is a high profile coaching job. But that's a complete lack of loyalty IMO.

Thing is stuff like this in NCAA football happens all of the time, where a successful coach leaves his team before a bowl game b/c he's accepted a new coaching job. I don't like it, but I understand it from the recruiting aspect.

Kelly did the same thing 3 years ago to Central Michigan when he was hired by UC, although I don't know if Central MI was headed to a bowl game or not. Even if they were, it certainly wasn't the Sugar Bowl they were going to go to.

I think it's a good hire though for ND. Kelly has done an outstanding job at UC. How many even knew they had a football program up until a couple of years ago?

And yeah, I've heard the rumors that Kelly is pro-choice. Interesting little nugget there, but has he confirmed it? Regardless, with the shape the Fighting Irish are in, it's an issue they were probably willing to overlook.

For the love of God, I hope he can get a defense in there.

I think he handled his selection poorly. Less than a week has passed that he told his team he was staying. He could have been more honest with his team. Maybe the NCAA should institute something more like the NFL. Coaches are off limits until your team is eliminated or played their bowl game.

As far as pro choice. He is a coach....not a politician that forms policy.

Jumping ship and moving on to another opportunity happens all the time. Not just in coaching, but just about every kind of job out there. Notre Dame needed to fill their coaching position as soon as possible so they could get right on track with their recruiting. It sucks for the Cincy players, and I'm sure they are upset by it but once the dust settles I think they will at least understand their former coach's decision.

I don't know. It might happen all the time in other jobs, but most jobs aren't ones where a number of people are relying on you to finish something where the whole nation is watching. If a teacher was to change schools midway through a semester, I would think the same thing. I think if Notre Dame, Kelly, and Wies are all professionals, they agree to the decision, keep quiet about it, Kelly takes Cincinnati to their bowl, Weis continues recruiting for ND, and when both teams' seasons are over, they announce it.

My knowledge of Notre Dame football can be summarized in three words:

Ruu-dy... Ruu-dy... Ruu-dy....

Oh and that bit about Ronald Reagan playing for them. Wait, no...

College football players leave college early every year to enter the NFL. When Kelly came to Cincy, he left Central Michigan early and left them in the dust for their bowl game.

I don't have a problem with him leaving before the bowl game with his former team. Like I said earlier, I hope he can bring in some defense.

Markwes, the problem I see with your idea about the "secret deal" is that basically Weiss would be recruiting players (and possibly signing???) that wouldn't play for him. Then if BK gets off to a rough start in ND, he could throw CW under the bus and say "Well, these aren't my players I recruited."

Sure, but he could say that either way. It's only freshmen that will be kids he actually recruited next year. But now that I think about it, I guess it wouldn't be in ND's best interest to allow someone they fired to recruit.
