Just wondering what you people thought. I don't think it will have that big impact on there reputation. However, not being able to sell half of their line will definitely hurt sales this year.

Personally, I am hoping for some great sales once they get the problem fixed and production starts again, say 0% interest on there highlander's would put me in the mood to buy one.

Wish I knew what would happen...my parents have 2 of Toyota's vehicles that are on the recall list, but they're just taking a wait and see approach for now.

Funny, they'd been GM people for as long as I can remember until they bought the Toyotas.

I think it will hurt them a little. It obviously hurts them as far as not having those cars for sale right now and they have to spend time and money correcting the issure on all of the existing cars. As far as their reputation, I don't think it will hurt it too much in the long run. To me they seem to be a good company and this wouldn't have any effect on my choice to buy a Toyota or another brand in the future. Unfortunate problems like this happen in business and they seem to be taking a respectable approach to remediation.

Looks like Congress wants answers about Toyota's situation...

"I look forward to learning more about the steps Toyota is taking to address safety defects, and I hope that the automaker will continue to cooperate with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to get unsafe vehicles off our roads. Our hearing will help us better understand how quickly and effectively Toyota and the NHTSA responded to consumer complaints about the safety of the recalled Toyota vehicles."

A Toyota spokesperson said that the company will cooperate with Congress during the hearings and offer insight as to cause of the recalls and Toyota's response.

I thought Congress was going to focus on JOBS? Unless Henry Waxman knows a thing or two about making a gas pedal, what good is this going to do? I think the fact that they're losing sales over this is motivation enough for Toyota to correct the problem.

And, oh the irony, Toyota is having to go before the owner of GM in a sense... affraid

IMO this is nothing but grandstanding by elected officials who have better things to do. Would Waxman and his cohorts feels the same if the recall had to do with faulty oil pumps or electronic control modules?

Congress doesnt need to be involved, but the NTSA does need to be involved, in fact it's their jobs.

In terms of how this will affect toyota, I think their sales will be hurt for obvious reasons. I also think this will be corrected quickly, and Toyota will be seen (rightly or wrongly) as taking the appropriate action, regardless of cost to their bottom line, when conditions warranted such. Going forward, this will likely barely be a blip on their radar in terms of issues.

The prius is next in the recall. Needing a software update. Just makes you kind of miss the old days when everything used to be connected, now it just computers, wires or electronic signals.

For the past week, the media has been on edge waiting for the results of an investigation into Jim Sikes runaway Toyota Prius. While they were busy digging into his personal life, a Congressional memo leaked, followed by an NHTSA report, both of which found little evidence to support Sikes' story. Today, Toyota has released its preliminary report on the incident, and the automaker has reached the same conclusion.
When this story came out, I didn't think it sounded right - had "balloon boy" written all over it. Now they are finding out that in every test done on Sikes's car, it has slowed when the accelerator and brake were applied at the same time, just like it is supposed to. And the brake wear is not consistent with someone who was braking for that long a time at that speed. I know I can't be the only one who was thinking why not just put it in neutral? Of course the answer was "Sikes called 911 but refused to heed the operator's advice to turn off the car or put the transmission in neutral, concerned that the car would flip over if he did." Either he's full of it or just an idiot.

Someone just looking for a Toyota payout. Unfortunately there will be more looking to score the Toyota payout, will clog the courts for a while.

Agree... Anyone else gtrying to figure out how the officer helped him bring the car to a safe stop? I'm in the neutral camp also, I would not shut the car off however because of the potential that you would have to get evasive at 90+ mph without power steering or brakes, and you may lock the steering wheel...

But yea, how many times is this going to happen?

I also thought it seems pretty coincidental that at the same time Toyota is performing recalls, something outrageous like this happens. At first, I thought it was just the media had sniffed out a story that would be hot at the moment, whereas at a different time, it might have gotten shoved to the wayside. But yeah, it sure sounds pretty iffy.

I do want to make the caveat, however, that depending on how ill-programmed the microcontroller was, the problem wouldn't necessarily manifest itself during a two-hour test. I found a bug in my own code for a truck wiper controller once that was caused by, I kid you not, disconnecting the wiper motor, attempting to use the wipers, returning wiper switch to normal position, and finally re-connecting the wiper motor. This would cause the wiper to run continuously, regardless of switch position. And there's certainly more where that came from.

I could definitely see in writing code that is certainly more complex than any wiper controller that there would be opportunities for bugs to hide for 99.99% of normal operation. Not to mention that there may have been a bizarre circumstance like a dip in voltage causing the chip to stall or maybe it just somehow strayed off the normal program path into the wild west of random bits and commands. I still am heavily leaning towards the guy wanting a chunk of dinero, but don't discount the ability for lackluster programming to create an awesomely stealthy bug.
