Mr Beck and his rally Empty Mr Beck and his rally

Post  Pez Tue Aug 31, 2010 5:39 pm

I find that Mr Beck is a complete tool, within two syllables I find him annoying, within two sentences I find him abhorrent. His choice of holding his rally at the place and day of the I have a dream speech was brilliant calculation. He's no fool.

It's an unfortunate consequence of free speech that we must put up with Mr Beck, and Ms Palin for that matter. The only thing I find wrong with the timing and location of his rally is that he couldn't find anything more intelligent to say... these are but a few of the costs of freedom...

I trust you felt the same way about Farrakhan's rally a few years back.

By the way...let us know when someone from the left will assemble that many people.

LOL... why you busting my chops? I read today that the Beck people put the estimate of attendees somewhere between a zillion and a bajillon. Other put the number more realistically around 47,000, which is about the population of Columbus... Indiana.

I dunno... maybe the 1.8 million that attended Obama's inauguration? Let me know when you decide that doesnt count... Wink

I find your words and attitude toward him (and Palin for that matter) quite interesting. You have listed 3 very unflattering adjectives to describe him but offer no reason why you feel that way. You refer to his choice of location as "brilliant calculation", which isn't exactly anything bad in itself. In reality, I pay very little attention to him, but I fail to see this rally as anything negative. According to his website, $5 million was raised for Special Operations Warrior Foundation. Dr. Alveda King was one of the speakers. Apparently, she didn't have any problem with the location. Beck himself touted this as a non-political event and even requested no signs, political or otherwise, be present. It was billed as an event to honor our military and "other upstanding citizens". Seems like good intentions are detested these days.

It's not like Beck had his rally at the "Martin Luther King Memorial." It was the Lincoln Memorial, where I'm sure countless rallies have been held. And maybe b/c I'm stupid (or racist), I've never associated a date with MLK's Dream speech, unlike other days that will live in infamy...December 7, 1941...September 11, 2001...September 11, 1985 (the day of Pete Rose's historic hit)...July 4, 1776...etc....

I feel Mr Beck is little more than a publicity hound that makes it his business to be a polarizing figure. His tone of voice is condescending, he reminds me very much of a guy at work I despise, he seems to be perpetually sarcastic, and doesn't have the most serious of intentions toward conservatism. He tends to pay lip service from the side of his mouth to the conservative fringe... meaning he wont actually say he doesn't believe that Obama is a US citizen, but does lend credence to the 'birther' movement by acknowledging their stance, he clings to the tea party movement as the most right wing faction of the day. I guess I dislike him much in the same way that conservatives disliked the Dixie Chicks for pandering to a French audience and criticizing the US president.

His choice of location and timing is brilliant because it accomplishes his goal of getting people to talk about Glen Beck.

I don't have a problem with the location either, that was the point of my original post. I certainly don't detest good intentions (though you have a point), I have no information on what the "Special Operations Warrior Foundation" does, but I doubt it's anything other than a worthwhile organization, despite it's ridiculous name.

LTRT wrote:"47,000" lol! where's that guy at? I've got some land to sell him.

k... I read the 47,000 estimate in the paper yesterday...

This is from wwnn.co.uk:

There are varying estimates as to the attendance of the said rally. The most conservative of which is from CBS which claims that around 78,000 to 96,000 people were in attendance during the Glen Beck’s rally.

The rally dubbed as “Restoring Honor” was a values and patriotism event aimed to restore honor in America and to raise funds for the non-profit Special Operations Warrior Foundation in honor of war veterans.
...
Glenn Beck and rally organizers contested the numbers from CBS and said that the crowd was about 800,000 to a million. Other media outfits seems to agree as NBC News and MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough estimated 500,000 people while The New York Post reported “an overflow crowd of 300,000 people”.

I get your point. But one thing to keep in mind is that he makes no bones about the fact that he is an entertainer and is in this business for the money. And to that point, your statement of getting people to talk about him is spot on. I feel the same way about Whoopi Goldberg as far as being condescending and all that. I just choose not to watch her show. Well, okay, I guess that makes it sound like I would watch The View even if she wasn't on it. Exclamation
