Juan Williams fired from NPR

Post  Pez on Fri Oct 22, 2010 8:34 am

Thank you NPR for continuing to offer a voice for civility and thoughtful discourse. While I respect Mr. Williams career as a journalist, it's increasingly clear that he is no longer thoughtful or civil in his discourse.

Yes, it's quite civil of them to say in public Juan needs to talk to a psychiatrist.

Ummm, yea. This is a guy who said he fears for his life when he's on a plane with Muslims. While you have a point, the CEO retracted the statement, apologized for it, and at the end of the day it's a pretty valid point.

Juan Williams decided he wanted to fox money so he shifted his opinion to the right and got a $2M contract out of the deal.

You might take his comment "I get nervous and worried" as "fears for his life" but I don't. I think it's his way of saying he is more aware of his surroundings since 9/11.

Williams goes on to say that the guy who attempted to blow up a car in Times Square back in May said recently in court that America's War with Muslims is just beginning and it's the first drop of blood.

So with that information, what's wrong to say that you get "nervous and worried" when you see someone dressed in Muslim garb in an airport?

What is Juan nervous about, exactly? You mention 9/11, so I don't know of any other conclusion to draw from his comment that he is nervous and worried that the Muslim next to him might hijack the plane and crash it into a building. What else can he be nervous about within the context of his statement?

To your second point, you are lending credibility to Faisal Shahzad by interpreting his comments as fact. Do you think he is deserving of such credibility?

I believe at the time Williams, O'Reilly, and someone else were talking about what happened to O'Reilly last week on The View where a couple of the wind-bags walked off the set after Bill O said that Muslims killed us on 9/11.

So will Rev's Jesse and Al get involved? Or will they stay on the sideline b/c the comment by Williams is considered a conservative view?

Remember when that famous liberal Obama said his white grandmother was fearful of black men. I guess that is okay since Obama said it. However anyone else can't state they are in fear of someone else without getting fired.

America is too PC sensitive.

You're getting sucked into the overly PC world. There is nothing right wing oriented about what he said. It's an honest comment and in my opinion is in no way a firable offense. The events of 9/11, and others, have engrained in our minds, regardless of political leanings, that many Muslims want us dead. Whether that is right or not doesn't make it a crime for an individual to be nervous in a similar situation.

pc?

Post  whoosieme on Fri Oct 22, 2010 11:13 pm

PC or Non PC isnt really the issue. It was a stupid statement. Think about it. If someone is a terrorist do you really think they are going to get on a plane dressed as a Muslim?? Hell no!!! And lest we forget Islam is a religion not a race...many radical Muslims from countries, other than the mideast, are very light complected. Bottom line is there is no way visually we can id a potental threat.

The main question is should he have gotten fired over it? Seems pretty extreme to me.

Williams went on to note that commentator Nina Totenberg said 15 years ago that if there is “retributive justice,” former Republican North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms or one of his grandchildren will get AIDS from a transfusion.

An NPR spokeswoman said Totenberg, who was not fired, has repeatedly apologized for her comments.
Good point.

PC is not the issue, free speech is not the issue, Juan Williams' credibility as an analyst is the issue. He's essentially become no longer qualified to do his job at NPR.

"Racism is a lazy man's substitute for using good judgment...Common sense becomes racism when skin color becomes a formula for figuring out who is a danger to me." - Juan Williams, "Eyes On the Prize," 1986.

vs:

“Look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. ...but when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, when I see people in Muslim garb, and I think they’re identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.” - Juan Williams, 2010, Fox News

Consumers of NPR news (that pay 161 million dollars a year to supplant the 3 millions given to NPR by the federal government) pay money in order to receive news from a source free from commercial interruption or influence. Fox news paid Juan Williams 2 million dollars to present his analysis, and the two contradictory quote above show that Juan William will change his opinion for money. That disqualifies him as a reliable analyst of news and current events.

If your job is to drive a truck for a living and you suddenly are no longer able to drive, you will not have that job anymore. It's as simple as that.

probably should have had a semi colon and the word "is" in there, but here I will improve it for you.

NPR radio = liberalism is good; conservative is bad organization.

lol... I never would have got it...

It's not as simple as that. Juan's credibility is toast, he could no longer do his job, and he actually violated NPR rules.

I would say NPR leans slightly left of center, and a 2008 MRI study found that the majority of NPR listensers are politically centrist, with an even number of conservatives and liberals on each side.

What do you actually base your opinion on, that NPR radio = liberalism is good, conservative is bad? I dont find anything of the sort.

You must not listen to what I listen to on NPR. There "all politics" is nothing but left wing whiners. Of course they might be a little right of the Huffington post but not by much. I have yet to hear a conservative (even as a guest) on NPR. But then I don't listen to them much anyway.

Another reason they should go away (or support themselves) nothing interesting is broadcasted that can't be found elsewhere.

I've listened to NPR every day since I was a teenager. They have conservatives on quite frequently. I'm not sure what you mean by 'all politics.' I've never heard of such a show.

This American Life, Prairie Home Companion, Talk of the nation science friday... none of these can be found anywhere else. News without commercials....

NPR "all politics" is a podcast.

Got it... our affiliate doesn't carry it. How many episodes have you listened to?

I guess you are right, lets get rid of Big Bird and Elmo too.

NPR has been pushing their liberal agenda off the public dime long enough. Their maddening penchant for insightful, discerning and intellectual analysis or news, along with their desire to actually ask questions and report the answers is sheer lunacy. What a stuffy bunch of elitists.

In all seriousness, they had a spot this morning where they were interviewing potential voters, and they had five soundbites. All five of these were critical of the Obama administration.
