Ft. Wayne "Sandbaggers"???

Heard some people calling in to the Pat White Show on WOWO yesterday saying there was a sign at the "Parkview Field" construction site that said something to the effect of "Future Home of the Ft. Wayne Sandbaggers."

Could this be true? Is that the name of our new baseball team? Or is just a marketing ploy? Or just one of the construction guys with a sense of humor?

I'd hope it's a joke. The sad thing is it could be a tribute to how the city "saved itself".. but no one would think of that, they'd just assume the team sucks.

I wouldn't expect anything less than a crappy name like this for a FW team.

Sandbaggers is STILL an upgrade from "Wizards", though.

Really? To me a Sandbagger is some who tries to throw game to secure higher draft spots next year etc ... A Sandbagger is someone who does not give it their all 100% of the time ... IN SPORTS. Now I know that Sandbaggers saved parts of our city in the past but the rest of the league and nation does not know that though ... I would be shocked if this was the new name.

It'd be one thing if they actually WERE 'sandbagging'...but they're not. People outside of the city will see the name "Sandbaggers" and be like, "WTF?" and possibly do research to see why the name was chosen.

That's what the name selection committee was shooting for.

Still...dumb name.

I like the River Rats... Actually, the "Sandbaggers" was on the short list of team names when they chose Wizards... Google Sandbaggers Fort Wayne, and there is a blog that mentions it...

Wizards renaming set for Thursday

Fort Wayne Wizards General Manager Mike Nutter confirmed late Tuesday morning that the announcement for renaming the city’s minor league baseball team will be made about 11 a.m. Thursday at the Grand Wayne Convention Center.

“It will be extremely open, and we’ll talk about how the process went (in renaming),” Nutter said.

Nutter said the organization will release a statement Wednesday with details about the name selection process that began in mid-June and a confirmed time for the announcement.

The Wizards has been the name of the team since its inception in Fort Wayne in 1993.

Nutter said the team’s owners from Hardball Capital will attend the announcement.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) When the owners of the Fort Wayne Wizards minor league baseball team announced plans to move from Memorial Stadium to the Harrison Square complex, they also announced the team would be getting a new name. The new name and team logo will be unveiled Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Earlier this year, a Name the Team Contest took place where fans submitted nominations. More than 2,500 names were turned in. From those, the winner was picked.

Check back here at wane.com to learn the new name after 11 a.m. Thursday, or watch NewsChannel 15 at noon.

Team management released a top 10 list of names that were amusing and still family friendly that didn't make the cut.
