Festivals - Fort Wayne
When do the festivals start in town here? Are there any fun things going on in Fort Wayne in March or April. I know cinco de mayo is in May ... can't wait ...

Ya know Bman, Cinco De Mayo does not mean there will be Five kinds of Mayonaise there..

What is your favorite festival? I am guessing if you are a beer drinker that you are a Germanfest fan?
I am not a big 3 Rivers Festival fan ... I prefer the ethnic/culturally diverse festivals.

I've only really been to Germanfest. I ordered up one of their pitchers without cups. The pitcher makes a perfectly good cup!
I REALLY wanted to see Dark Star Orchestra last year, but missed it.

You know, my favorite thing about the Three Rivers Festival is the chalk art on Main Street. Amazing what people can do!

I've seen some pretty good stuff too. I never seem to have my camera when I go to these places.

Re: Festivals - Fort Wayne
That is the one thing I miss the most from New Orleans. There is a festival every weekend of some type in the metro area.
Re: Festivals - Fort Wayne
I liked Ribfest until they started charging to get in. Usually all I wanted to do was go and pick up some food. I didnt really feel like staying and listening to the music. You used to be able to do that, but now they charge to even go get food.

Re: Festivals - Fort Wayne
yeah, that's a problem I have as well sunny. Not too expensive if you think about a night out but pretty expensive if you're just there to eat. Also the prices in general are expensive so you don't get to sample various places that are only here once a year. At the Taste of Chicago they have sample sizes that are fairly inexpensive which allows you try many different vendors.

I love the Taste of Chicago for that reason, plus I think they also have wines, don't they?
We used to drive over to New Orleans every year to go to the New Orleans Wine and Food Festival. My favorite part was where they'd close down Royal Street, and have wine tastings in some of the antique shops along with different types of food. The best of all worlds -- wine, shopping and food. Yum.

Ok Aggie that does sound great, make me jealous that I am looking forward to GermanFest, GreekFest etc ....

Re: Festivals - Fort Wayne
Well, if it makes you feel better, Bman, the New Orleans stuff wasn't cheap. The Royal Street Stroll (as it's officially called) is $75/person this year. I'm pretty sure that's more expensive than when we went.
It was still our annual treat, and I miss going. Not quite as easy to get to N.O. from here......

Here in Toronto we have quite a few Taste of Different Cuisines during the summer.
The largest one being the Taste of the Danforth, this is the Greek area. The street is closed off from Friday afternoon to Sunday night, midnight.

Re: Festivals - Fort Wayne
Dark Star Orchestra was badass last year. That was my 4th or 5th time seeing them and probably the 2nd best show I've seen them do.
As for festivals...hopefully the Maumee Music Fest makes a return this year. If so, in my opinion, it's the only "festival" worth attending in FW. With the exception of Germanfest, of course. But that's just one big drunkfest...

Re: Festivals - Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne should siphon off some of the bands from the Pitchfork fest in Chicago. Like just two or four of those bands. I read in the paper that Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks latest record (Real Emotional Trash) sold well at Wooden Nickel on Anthony. Someone should bring them here with some other bands.
Fort Wayne needs a mainline of hip bands to offset all this sleazy, low rent shit. Cultural redevelopment! Let's throw blues sleaze and hardcore into the three rivers and start anew. Seriously, if Fort Wayne wants to twart "brain drain" and attract "better minds" then it should appeal to the cultural sensibilities of these folks. Give them a hip nightlife and cease pandering to the lowest common denominator. Indie Brad & Betty don't want to relocate to a town that features nothing other than geeze and sleaze. Give them the good jobs AND the hip shit and then maybe "the Fort" will have something special.

I agree with you in concept, not sure if we see eye to eye on music, maybe we do, but this town need to become a place where people want to live for businesses to thrive here. If we could be culturally diverse and more artistically inclined with our low cost of living this place would rock.

I must admit I actually enjoyed the music. They played some pretty good blues while I was there. But I can definitely see if I wasn't in for the music, it would seem dumb to have to pay to have an opportunity to pay again to eat.

Re: Festivals - Fort Wayne
I only go for food and beer, no desire to see any bands because they never get any good ones. Of course, there's really no one I'd pay to see anymore, all the bands I want to see live I've either already seen, or the lead singer is dead, one exception being Soundgarden, and they aren't together.
Anyway.. GreekFest for me. I loooooooooooove Gyro's. The beer is decent, it's not crowded at all, kids are allowed in there at all times, and it's fun to see my DJ partner's family.
