Space Where to?
Re: Space where to?
Did we even actually go to the moon??? Wasn't it all faked? Just kidding!
I voted Mars. Don't know what the benefits will be, but I'm sure a project like that would put/keep a lot of people working, possibly restore/increase a sense of pride in Americans and rally around a positive story. Don't know.

Re: Space where to?
I also voted Mars. Obviously, this would be dependent on our technology, but I think if we had a trip to Mars as a directive, the technology would advance in order to make the endeavor as fruitful as possible. It could be responsible for all sorts of progress in science.

Re: Space where to?
The benefits of the space program are sometimes difficult to quantify, but I think a mars trip will provide huge technological advances that we will be able to capitalize on... And it would be cool as sh** :-)

Re: Space where to?
I voted a waste of money. Getting to Mars would be cool, no doubt. I'm sure there are many scientific advantages that could come from this type of accomplishment. I just can't imagine how many billions of dollars that would cost. That money/time/effort should be spent in many other ways instead.

Re: Space where to?
Actually even going back to the moon would be great, just chose mars because we haven't been there yet. Main thing is we have to go somewhere, we can't sit idly by and become stagnant in our space endeavors. While money is tight right now the possible benefits from new technology developing the equipment to get there or stay there. What if we actually discover something on the moon or mars that we could use back here on earth to improve our lives.
What would have happen if the early explorers never left Europe due to money or because it was dangerous.

Re: Space where to?
Then most of us with ancestors from there would still be stuck in Europe where the gov't would tell us what kind of putt-putt cars to drive, what temperature to put our thermostats at, what public transportation we have to take, what kind of health care we'll have...oh wait, nevermind.Scooby01_98 wrote:What would have happen if the early explorers never left Europe due to money or because it was dangerous.

Do they still make that stuff? I remember my mom serving us kids that as a "treat".

Re: Space where to?
some of the other things we now have due to the space program. First link is just what the space shuttle has brought us. Second and third link is the space program in general. Fourth link is a kids page but still relevant.

Re: Space where to?
I completely agree... The Space Program is pretty much a must, there are benefits we have not even discovered yet, I guarantee.Pez wrote:The benefits of the space program are sometimes difficult to quantify, but I think a mars trip will provide huge technological advances that we will be able to capitalize on... Re: Space where to?
i am still laughing from when bush in 2006 i think..said it would take us minimally 10 years to prepare for another moon landing...when back in the 60's we did it with virtually no technology or experience and had nary a glitch ;-)

I believe you mean this NASA vision he introduced in 2004. A little bit more than just going to the moon.

Re: Space where to?
I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist, but I sometimes question that. I just recently heard talk about going back to the moon and it will supposedly take years to prepare. If we went there 40 years ago, shouldn't it be old hat by now?Cincy Fan 44 wrote:Did we even actually go to the moon??? Wasn't it all faked? Just kidding!

Re: Space where to?
i am quite sure it was 2 years ago bush spoke specifically about another moon landing and the prep it would take and all the tech stuff that would need worked out and it would need to be at least 10 years in the future if not more.. it was when china and japan were both preparing for unmanned moon flights. bush even suggested we may do an unmanned first then do manned later.

sure..since you dont seem to have access to google...actually this happened in 2004, earlier than i thought.

note from article..."The effort to return to the moon will require building new spacecraft and sending out robotic craft to provide materials to be used later by human explorers, say experts."
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/01/040115080116.htm
from this article...."Our third goal," Bush said, "is to return to the moon by 2020, as the launching point for missions beyond." He proposed sending robotic probes to the lunar surface by 2008, with a human mission as early as 2015, "with the goal of living and working there for increasingly extended periods of time."

I provided 2004 links....I wanted your 2006 link since I couldn't find anything for 2006.
I am quite familiar with search engines which is why I knew your 2006 statement was false.

Lets spend our time, money and focus on fullly applying the technological discoveries we've gained to clean up our own backyard - profitably.

A panel reviewing NASA's current plans for human space flight will report that there is no realistic way to return to the moon by 2020 -- or even 2028.

Now all of a sudden we are being fiscally responsible? I thought $50 billion was a drop in the bucket for this administration. The ''program of record'' -- NASA's current strategy -- has not fared well in the committee's review. Former astronaut Sally Ride, a member of the panel, said the gap between NASA's goals and its current budget totals roughly $50 billion by 2020.
