its communism in america i tell you!
this was my 3rd memorable reality check time about our great country. the first was learning about how long america ignored the plight of what the nazis were doing to the jews before we finally joined the war, the 2nd was the mccarthy issues.
it taught me that if you go against the grain and want equality for all, you are an unpatriotic communist in the eyes of too many. still true.

You've come a long way baby!
I heard an interesting line in the movie Watchmen (I have finally finished watching). Says a lot to me about how some get that warm fuzzy feeling about reminiscing nostalgic-like about the good 'ol days. It made me stop and think about, how for most of history it seems terror has gripped the world about the fad threat of the age.
Sally Jupiter: Everyday the future grows a little bit darker, but the past just keeps getting brighter.
This year Obama used Lady Liberty for a staged flyby. If I remember to I'll post that here.

Fear? You mean like this?Bman wrote:all the right wing has EVER had was fear, that playbook has worked for them for years and years.
PRESIDENT OBAMA: Everyone in this room knows what will happen if we do nothing. Our deficit will grow. More families will go bankrupt. More businesses will close. More Americans will lose their coverage when they are sick and need it most. And more will die as a result. We know these things to be true.

thats what the repubs were saying too, before they decided to just say no to everything and make healthcare obamas waterloo. check your facts and see if wha he says is anywhere near true. its a bit different than screaming commie at everyone he doesnt agree with.

I think it's a fair statement to make that everyone on this board is in favor of healthcare reform. Costs are out of control and people shouldn't be denied needed treatment. The issue is how to go about reforming the healthcare system. Obama hasn't been clear on the details. You can't simply print more money to pay for this and his statement that reform will pay for itself by eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse simply won't happen. If it could happen it would have happened already.
Tort reform needs to be a big part of the overhaul. Mark will agree with me since we both work in the malpractice insurance industry. There also needs to be some plan in effect that will not cause a family to go bankrupt if a family member becomes sick with cancer and has to mortgage house and find other means to support paying the thousands and thousands of dollars in medical costs for treatment. Exactly how to do that I'm not sure but I haven't heard anything solid from anyone else either.
Politicizing it certainly isn't the answer.

wow kromie whatever you were smokin when you posted this, you need to do it more often..good post!
i dont agree with your statement ""his statement that reform will pay for itself by eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse simply won't happen. If it could happen it would have happened already."" it hasnt happened not because it cant be done, but because of simple $$ greed and no legal reason to curb it is what i think.
i suspect forcing reform will pay a big chunk, along with the tax on the top percent of wage earners going back to where it was pre-bush. i dont think it will all be covered if people flock to it in droves early in the game. if it remains at approx 20% of the population that it is intended for, i think it will get a good start and not cost an excessive amount.. keeping in mind most of those who qualify for other options like schip and medicare will not be transferred. it will be for the lowest income folks is my understanding. and i think a pub option will not eliminate private insurance either. it may close some down and those who remain will need to do some serious conforming but i believe they will do so.
on tort reform..shouldnt that be each states decision on what and how to implement it? if its part of this package it will just add to the frenzied masses who are angry because the gov is taking over and taking away their rights?
and lots of states have made laws regarding tort reform..i cant find any stats that show their premiums or costs have gone down..they seem to be in exactly the same boat we are all agreeing is leaking. this site includes a map showing state by state which have implemented which laws. i looked at indiana and texas. texas has a boatload of stuff, we have our share.

Re: its communism in america i tell you!
Healthcare reform (to me) is like having to wear special shoes through kindergarten because of a club foot. It was a condition I was born with but by the time I was 5 years old, those dorky "forrest gump" shoes fixed my problem.
I think the healthcare insurance industry CAN and MUST conform to changes. i.e. reform.
Just curious Kroman and Markwes, what are the biggest areas of waste you've seen from your sector? How will tort reforms change the way malpractice insurance is packaged, etc.? I know almost nothing about MP insurance.

Frivoulous lawsuits are a big waste. Seems the goal is to get the case in front of a jury and hope the jury sympathizes with the plaintiff instead of looking at the facts and listening to expert witnesses.

Re: its communism in america i tell you!
i am tired of hearing about people who get rich quick..for life..off suing insurance companies..or other businesses.. for alot of very debateable things. granted if they hadnt won such huge class action suits in the past we would be in an even deeper hole now. get enough to take care of the problem and SOME but not uber excessive compensation..not mulitmillions in cash plus lifelong free healthcare.

Re: its communism in america i tell you!
States that have enacted a cap on how much a plaintiff can win have generally seen success. It's pretty easy to come up with a monetary figure on actual expenses, like surgeries needed to fix a botched medical procedure, but the problem comes when a jury has to decide an amount for non-monetary items, as in pain and suffering. We have all seen examples of lawsuits where the plaintiff was awarded millions and we probably thought "How did they reach that figure?".
Here's an example I found of a frivolous lawsuit from way back. It's worth a chuckle but proves the point of suing when even when there was no intent to harm.
