The Louisiana Purchase: $300 Million For My Vote!
Yep, she took the bait, a typical politician doing what's normal in DC.
On the eve of Saturday's showdown in the Senate over health-care reform, Democratic leaders still hadn't secured the support of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), one of the 60 votes needed to keep the legislation alive. The wavering lawmaker was offered a sweetener: at least $100 million in extra federal money for her home state.
And so it came to pass that Landrieu walked onto the Senate floor midafternoon Saturday to announce her aye vote -- and to trumpet the financial "fix" she had arranged for Louisiana. "I am not going to be defensive," she declared. "And it's not a $100 million fix. It's a $300 million fix."

Riiiiight... the Republican wouldn't have settled for less than 500 million, and then would have called it a win for NOLA reconstruction.

Personally I think they shouldn't reconstruct that area at all. What do you expect when you build BELOW sea level? Isn't that how it's done in the Bizzaro World? Re: hurdle passed
i think if you climb into your time machine and go back a few weeks you will learn that obama went and had alotta discussions in her state, with their gov, other leaders trying to improve what bush ignored since katrina happened and the hs people..and o made it was clear he was going to try to find a way to get more medicaid availability to the people who need it there and have had no healthcare since katrina..plus cash influx to aid in building and equiping needed stuff like fire stations and health clinics.
and so what if it was in hopes of swaying healthcare passage..is this a political first?
drumroll....in my best john mccain whine...

Going on that same notion they shouldn't build in Malibu either, after all that is slowly slipping into the Pacific, however when something is happening there, it's a major tragedy.
They could learn something from the Dutch about building below sea level.

If they want to build there, fine. But don't expect me to have to foot the bill for their idiocy when it all comes crashing down.Canuck wrote:Cincy Fan 44 wrote:Personally I think they shouldn't reconstruct that area at all. How did I know this would get the "Republicans would do the same thing" and "Blame Bush" response?LTRT wrote:The Louisiana Purchase: $300 Million For My Vote!On the eve of Saturday's showdown in the Senate over health-care reform, Democratic leaders still hadn't secured the support of Sen. ...and Bears. Oh my! I'd also expect you'd decline federal dollars earmarked for repairs after a tornado or flood. Correct?
You "foot the bill", that's great. Taxes you've paid are still "yours"... interesting!

So I should just shut up about how my taxes (and yours) are spent?meta4 wrote:Cincy Fan 44 wrote:

I didn't say that. I was just making a remark about your use of possessive pronouns. My second comment was to highlight that if you have a problem spending "your" federal dollars in Louisiana, we (in Indiana) should likewise receive no federal aid following any "act of God". Period.

I think they should look at it on a case by case basis. Don't give fed funds to the idiots who build below sea level and then cry when it floods. Aren't there laws (just wondering) about building in a flood plain? I don't think insurance will even cover you if you do, so why should we the taxpayer?meta4 wrote:Cincy Fan 44 wrote:So I should just shut up about how my taxes (and yours) are spent?meta4 wrote:Cincy Fan 44 wrote:

Well, obviously because the government should be run like an insurance corporation.

I guess I should ask you how much are you willing to pay for gas? Now most of NOLA has been below sea level. However, do to our need for OIL we have basically destroyed the bayous that once protected NOLA and southern LA. NOLA also has the only terminal that can off load crude oil from super tankers. Has pipelines running from the gulf right straight to refinerys (you know those big smelly things no one else wants, well except for Texas).
Just recently (last two weeks) COE has been found guilty of not building proper levees, this was under both DEMS and REPUB congressional, presidencies and governorships.
New Orleans deserves to survive just as much as other communities along the Mississippi River, San Andreas fault, FL and where every other community has natural disasters.
Re: hurdle passed
Really though, no one saw that coming. Banks were still giving loans, so they apparently didn't foresee anything like that. Don't forget we had homes destroyed by floods here a few years back. That said, it's still wrong to "buy" a vote, which is pretty much what happened.Cincy Fan 44 wrote:I think they should look at it on a case by case basis.
