Irish Catholic Church hid sex abuse for decades: official

More investigations like this should be conducted across the board regardless of religion.
And these bastards should be jailed for life if found guilty.

DUBLIN (AFP) - Ireland's Catholic Church apologised and admitted its shame Thursday after a damning new report showed it covered up child sex abuse over more than three decades.

The Irish government also said sorry for failing to protect children after the latest report, published six months after a first landmark study revealed widespread abuse of children in Catholic care.

"I offer to each and every survivor my apology, my sorrow and my shame for what happened," said Diarmuid Martin, who has been archbishop of Dublin since 2004.

"I am aware that no words of apology will ever be sufficient," he said, adding that "the fact that many abusers were priests constituted both an offence to God and an affront to the priesthood."

agreed canuck. i was just repulsed when i read this. and so soon after the other horrific report on irelands catholic-run institutions. long as pedophiles are confident their church will sweep it under the rug these acts will continue to be covered up.

You're repulsed because it's associated with the Catholic Church. But you don't give much thought about the thousands of sex offenders who aren't claiming to be Christian. Because that wouldn't help your anti-Christian agenda would it? Sad but true.

Your post makes no sense. The Church covered this up, period. What does that have to do with other sex offenders, whether they're Christian or not?

forgive me for commenting on the story that opened this thread mark. i know its out of line to do so on a board where topics of discussion are offered up.

but now that you accuse me of being a hater of catholics and anti-christian, remind me please of all the sexual abuse stories in the news over the years of the perps who proclaimed they were not religious. i will gladly look at any sources and agree non religious people also commit pedophelia for each one you offer up.

as i often say..there are plenty of good christians out there, there are plenty of good people following other religions out there, there are plenty of good nonreligious people out there. my non belief is not hate or anti. my angst with many is their sense of superiority, their hollow shouting of their rights being trampled, and their insistance that national patriotism and morals can only be achieved when one joins their belief system.

i cant help it if the FACT is that those interested in molesting children or adults who are vulnerable know a good place to find those folks is in a religious OR educational setting. i feel you are the hater..of nonreligion people who defend their views and discuss news/history FACTS that do not shine a warm fuzzy light on some religious institutions in general. boo frickin hoo.

Is this the same Catholic Church(here in Ft Wayne) that made my BIL jump through hoops last month? Hoops to take communion? Hoops because he(GASP!!!!) had the nerve to get married in the Luthern church 35 yrs ago and didnt ask their permission? Even though he NEVER left the Catholic Church and went to mass weekly??? The Catholic Church that ran an ad on tv with the shifty-eyed Bishop in his clown outfit bidding lapsed Catholics to "come home to the Church"???? All the while dening communion to Catholics that NEVER left the church???? Wonder if the Bishop denied communion to the priests he KNEW were doing kids? Esp back in Boston????
Almost all organized "anything" from churches to the Boy Scouts have child molesters in their midst but only the Catholic Church protected them from the law...inclucing Darcy who knew what was going on in Boston but chose NOT to report it to the police....who instead reported it to Cardinal Law who passed the priest off on other churches within his realm...who when the shit hit the fan was called home to Rome by the now dead Pope so he didnt have to face the music here in the US.

It has to do with certain individuals here who look to belittle a certain group, in this case Catholics. My post wasn't about this one story. It's tragic and those involved should be punished. But please understand it wasn't "the Church" that covered it up. It was individuals who knew and didn't say anything. I am a member of "the Church" and I can say I knew absolutely nothing about abuse in Ireland. I've never even been to Ireland. Anyway, that's my story.

If the protection and cover ups went all the way to Rome id say "the church" is certainly very guilty.
