Weekly Jobless Claims Post Surprise Jump, Hit 500,000
Could the media QUIT using the word unexpectedly.
Jobless claims rise to highest level in 9 months
Initial requests for jobless benefits jump to 500,000, highest level since November

How's that 'shovel ready' stimulus working out? "back from the brink...", LOL.

New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly climbed to a nine-month high last week, yet another setback to the frail economic recovery.

Homebuilders and other construction firms are laying off more workers as the housing sector slumps after the expiration of a popular homebuyers' tax credit. State and local governments are also cutting jobs to close large budget gaps.
The increase suggests the economy is creating even fewer jobs than in the first half of this year, when private employers added an average of about 100,000 jobs per month. That's barely enough to keep the unemployment rate from rising.

Obama now blames poor job numbers on congressional inaction. Wait! His party runs Congress

Let's see here..........
"If we pass the stimulus, the unemp rate won't go over 8%"
"If we pass the stimulus, we'll have millions of 'shovel-ready' jobs"
"If we pass Obamacare, your rates won't rise"
"If we help people with their mortages, they won't lose the homes"
and
"Recovery Summer"
geez, I'm tired of writing, wake up and smell the roses would you.

Re: Where Are the Jobs, Mr. President?
Seems to me the unemployment rate just creeped up! 20 months into Obama's term! Whose fault is that? I would say we are still in the vicious downward cycle. But it is also evident that everything the Obama administration has done to "stimulate" jobs has failed. It's time he realized he's the president and start acting like a president instead of acting like a circus clown.

Accomplishments I'm sure that will be well rewarded in the November 2010 and 2012 elections!

Re: Where Are the Jobs, Mr. President?
You're entitled to your opinion. However I was sarcastic with my election comment! The President thinks he and government have all the answers and I think it will be proven this November that a majority of hard-working, AMERICANS will disagree with him and the democrats! Even the talking heads on MSNBC and CNN are conceding defeat in November! Surely if the president was doing such a great job of representing the will of the American people then that would be reflected this November as well! Time will tell but I, for one, am tired of our government interfering with our country! Both repubs and dems should get their hands off the economy and the hell out of our lives!

If you're happy with the status quo then keep voting the way you are! We need to overhaul congress and get rid of "career" politicians!

Re: Where Are the Jobs, Mr. President?
As I have said before, there is very little a president can do to boost an economy. But there is much he can do ruin it. This guy has no clue. Ron Paul wouldn't have been the perfect president, but he is hands down better than the one we have.floridafun wrote:so some unpolitician can come in and straighten everything out...because while they are not in office they say they will? like all the bog changes ron paul has made for instance?

See how dem candidates have started to distance themselves from the White House? I hate to break this to them but there is no clearer message. Spend, spend, spend never works. From union activists to Democratic members of Congress, the message to the White House is clear: They want President Obama to present a clearer, more coherent message about his plans to turn around the economy.

It's them...
Let's see here...nearly 2 years in office and he continues to blame the previous administation and the GOP for his failed policies.
Prediction go as follows:
"After 3 years in office and he continues to blame the previous administation and the GOP for his failed policies".
"After 4 years in office and he continues to blame the previous administation and the GOP for his failed policies".

Yea, I agree. Sometimes I think the GOP was quite resourceful in how they kept f-ing up so bad. It's going to take several more years to make up for 8 solid years of suck: one necessary war neglected while the GOP focused on an unnecessary (and more expensive) war.... Then they cut taxes, tortured people, failed to get our soldiers out of Iraq, failed to catch Osama bin Laden, made Iran a larger player in the middle east... \
It takes work to F something up so badly.

In all honesty, I get incensed when I see conservatives blaming Obama for Bush's mistakes, and liberals blaming Bush for Obama's mistakes. It doesnt really imply rational thought.

OEF, ONE, and OIF have cost a trillion and change, about the same amount as the stimulus.
Despite this, Bush subscribed to the supply side theory (shocking, I know) and cut taxes in order to grow the economy and create jobs. In a good economy where we don't have things like toxic assets and two wars, well it might have worked.
No one likes to pay taxes, but Bush's tax cuts were extremely irresponsible, and when he handed the reigns over, the economy was a shambles and unemployment was 7% or so, and our auto and financial industries were on the brink of catastrophic ruin. The expectation that Obama can correct all these issues within 17 months is pretty unreasonable.
Every administration makes mistakes, Bush 1 made a big mistake in Iraq, Clinton made big mistakes in health care and (in 20/20 hindsight) not going after bin Laden on the somewhat thin evidence he was responsible for the USS Cole, Bush 2 made big mistakes with the wars and irresponsibly cutting taxes, Obama has made mistakes in underestimating the direness of the economic situation he was on point to fix...
Logic has been run over by the rhetorical bus.
