Re: drill baby drill!
I just knew it was a matter of time before something like this was posted. Better just get rid of anything and everything that can hurt us and live like hermits the rest of our lives for fear of something really bad hurting us.

I recognize the satire here obviously, but I dont think anyone in the realm of legitmate political thought is stating that it's safe clean and spill proof. The unfortunate fact remains that we are dependent on middle east oil, and that is a threat to our security and sovereignty. While alternative energy is clearly the future and we are clearly making too small an investment in such, we dont really have a choice but to supplant our fossil fuel supplies. For better or worse, the drilling zones approved by Obama to me represent a case in point of why he will be remembered as one of the best presidents of our lifetimes. He makes the difficult choices, the right choices, despite the fact that they may be out of line with one political vein or another.
I personally think that we should have a new WPA that takes a small amount of the TARP fund and buys thousands of acres in West Texas and builds the worlds largest wind farm... but that is just what I would do...
In either case, our dependence of fossil fuels is nothing that is going away any time soon... doubtful in any of our lifetimes.

You talking to me? If so, I have to point out that "agenda" is actually the plural form of "agendum...." So, it would be more appropriate to say 'Way to downplay a tragedy to support your agenda, whatever they are.' But then of course people would think you is uppity.

WOW way to go off on nothing (as usual). No crude oil spilled. Only residual oil from the rig (i.e. oil used for the maintenance of equipment) less than 200 gallons (with almost all of it contained and cleaned up). There was diesel fuel on the rig 700,000 bbl but so far nothing from that has leaked yet. The well head isn't leaking which basically proves the safety equipment now used in drilling is working and drilling remains safe. With the equipment now in place even if either of those items started leaking it would be cleaned up immediately.

It was in my backyard. I was stationed ( air station, MSO, & Sector) and lived in New Orleans metro area for over 10 years. I know how safe offshore drilling can be and how often we inspected the rigs. How many flights the air station did just checking for oil sheens (which by the way was mostly by shipping).

Gosh I think it's time to start living like the Amish so that they'll shut down all these oil rigs and coal mines...
Re: drill baby drill!
nobody said oil drilling would be safe...
(2008) "It's a matter of Congress allowing these lands to be tapped -- the offshore drilling -- the allowance given there, also, for safe, reliable and ethical drilling of these resources," Palin said.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/09/palin-takes-que.html
From her web site:
Governor Palin stressed the need to enact an energy policy that includes oil and gas production from domestic sources, since failure to enact a sound energy policy is having real-life consequences. The Governor reminded members of Congress that the footprint of development would be less than 2,000 acres. She also assured members that any development would be conducted in a responsible and environmentally safe manner.
http://usconservatives.about.com/od/environment/a/AlaskaOil.htm
(2008) An example of leadership or reckless chutzpah? On Monday, John McCain visited Santa Barbara, the scene of one of the great environmental disasters in American history, and proceeded to downplay the potential consequences of lifting the federal moratorium on new offshore drilling. Modern drilling technology is environmentally safe, he told the audience.

Agenda aside, what is your solution? Like Pez said, we are dependent on Middle East oil. Looking into alternative energy sources is fine, but we will still need oil for years to come.floridafun wrote:Markwes wrote:Way to downplay a tragedy to support your agenda, whatever that is.

So I expect you to have nothing to do with anything that is drilled for the rest of your life. No car, no public transportation, no electricity, no bicycles (tires are made from crude oil). Just hoof it, grow what you eat, sew you own clothes (by hand none of that bad electricity to run the sewing machine, could come from oil, natural gas). No using a computer, etc.

You do know that crude oil is naturally released under the ocean right?
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/05/15/natural-petroleum-seeps-release-equivalent-of-eight-to-80-exxon-valdez-oil-spills/
While it is being released more quickly from this now broken well head, the clean up process continues to get better each year after a spill. I stand by the procedure is much safer today and will be even more safer tomorrow than back in 1969 or even 2009.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/environment/2010-04-24-oil-rig-explosion-leak_N.htm
For days, the Coast Guard has said no oil appeared to be escaping from the well head on the ocean floor. Rear Adm. Mary Landry said the leak was a new discovery but could have begun when the rig sank on Thursday, two days after the initial explosion.
"We thought what we were dealing with as of yesterday was a surface residual (oil) from the mobile offshore drilling unit," Landry said. "In addition to that is oil emanating from the well. It is a big change from yesterday ... This is a very serious spill, absolutely."

wow the "nothing (as usual). No crude oil spilled. Only residual oil from the rig (i.e. oil used for the maintenance of equipment) less than 200 gallons" problem just keeps getting bigger and more dangerous. they now want and will recieve some socialist big gov aid/intervention. i sure hope the environmental impact is staunched. this is scarey.

But time may be running out. Not only was a third leak discovered — which government officials said is spewing five times as much oil into the water than originally estimated — but it might be closer to shore than previously known, and could have oil washing up on shore by Friday.
At the same time, there appeared to be a rift developing between BP and the Coast Guard, which is overseeing the increasingly desperate operation to contain the spill and clean it up.

This is getting pretty ugly... I thought I heard they lit it on fire yesterday?
When the rate was 42,000 gallons a day, it would have taken a month to equal the exxon valdez. Now it will take 6.2 days. :-(

They had one controlled burn which was successful. From what I heard they plan more today.

Oil rig overturns in La.; no leaks detected
(AP) – 1 hour ago
MORGAN CITY, La. — Officials say an oil drilling rig on its way to a scrap yard has overturned in Louisiana.
No injuries have been reported. The overturned rig is unrelated to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that threatens the coast's fragile ecosystem.
The Coast Guard said Friday that the rig overturned about 80 miles west-southwest of New Orleans.
It can carry about 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel, but Coast Guard officials did not know how much fuel was on board. Coast Guard investigators say no fuel leaks have been found.
About 500 feet of boom has been set up around the rig to contain any fuel that might leak as a precaution.
Tina Moore, the owner of T. Moore Services, which owned the rig, says it was being transported to a demolition and scrap yard. She says the rig was mounted on a barge.
