Whack Job Burns Koran
Seems like this might have already been posted here, but I did a search for "Koran" and couldn't find it. What's the point of doing this? How would we react as a nation if someone burned the Bible? Hopefully, we could turn the other cheek, but there are those who would react more strongly.

Spewing the gospel of unadulterated hate
By LEONARD PITTS JR.
lpitts@MiamiHerald.com
Saturday is International Burn a Koran Day.
Perhaps you hadn't heard. The day is the brainchild of one Terry Jones, pastor of the tiny Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville. You will not be surprised to hear that his plan to build a bonfire of Korans has stirred passions around the world. The New York Times reports Jones has been condemned by Muslim leaders in Egypt, Indonesia and elsewhere and that some U.S. preachers plan to read the Koran in Sunday services as an act of religious solidarity.
Supporters have encouraged Jones to barbecue the Koran with pork, a meat Islam forbids. A young Muslim student at the University of Florida told The Miami Herald of the ``uneasiness'' she now feels.
And if you're wondering how Jones picked the day for this repugnant act, it's simple. Saturday is the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. In other words, he proposes to commemorate an act of hate with an act of hate.
He will do this, he says, even though he's been denied a permit.
He will do it, he says, in the face of protest from Christians and Muslims alike.
He will do it, he says, even though half his church has deserted him.
He will do it, he says, even though it cannot help but inflame radical Muslims.
He will do it, he says, even though it might place U.S. soldiers overseas at risk.
And the surprising thing is that none of this is surprising. To the contrary, you find yourself wondering how something like this did not happen long ago. After all, what Jones plans to do feels sadly predictable, pathetically in line with the kind of sentiments that have been oozing out of our computers, televisions and radios for years now.

What bothers me more is that this guy has garnered the attention of the world for being an obtuse jackass.

Agree, and I just fed into that by starting a topic on it. Sometimes, I think today people are more concerned about getting their names in the news than taking a moral stand. (yes, stating the obvious, but this probably has been true for years - example: Joseph McCarthy)

Not sure how someone can consider themselves a man of God (i.e. preacher, minister etc.) and destroy another faiths religious symbol. However, if the Iman see's nothing wrong building a new mosque next to ground zero then why not this?

(Remember) when the angels said, “O Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him (God), whose name is the Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, revered in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (to God). He will speak to the people from his cradle and as a man, and he is of the righteous.” She said, “My Lord, how can I have a child when no mortal has touched me?” He said, “So (it will be). God creates what He wills. If He decrees a thing, He says to it only, ‘Be!’ and it is.” (Quran, 3:45-47)
Thats why.

[The burning of books containing "un-German ideas" by Nazi storm troopers and Nazi-affiliated college students in May 1933 was a symbolic act demonstrating that the new Nazi regime would not tolerate artistic, literary, scientific, or political ideas that differed from their own anti-Semitic, nationalist ideology, and also indicated they would use violence to silence any opposition. ]
That's also why not...

The quote above is a passage from the Quaran... honoring Jesus Christ and proclaiming him to be a virgin birth. Shall we burn other texts that make similar claims? Can you think of any?

I think you might have misunderstood me. I am saying a leader of a church (man of god (priest, minister etc)) should be tolerant of other religious symbols. i.e. the bible, the quran etc. So I am saying the church should not carry out the burning.
But at the same time I understand this small time preachers thought process. The insensitive of the Iman to build a new mosque at ground zero against the wishes of the people in NYC is the equivalent of this preacher's right to burn the quran.
Re: Whack Job Burns Koran
ah... i did misunderstand you... I interpreted your comment to mean something along the lines of, 'if they are going to build a mosque, then why not torch their books....' My bad..

I read this story and got to thinking. This is the difference between the western world and the Arab world. One guy in America threatens to burns Korans and causes a big uproar. Protesters actually carry out the burning of an American flag and it gets a slight mention in a news story. And instead of condemning that act, I bet most Americans who read this story will say "Look, see what the nutcase preacher did? He made someone burn our flag!".As thousands of Afghans protested a tiny Florida church's plan to burn the Muslim holy book, the church's pastor said he won't follow through on the plan if he's able to meet Saturday with the organizers behind a mosque planned near ground zero in New York.
In Afghanistan, at least 11 people were injured today in protests. Police in the northern province of Badakhshan say several hundred demonstrators ran toward a NATO compound, where four attackers and five police were injured in clashes. Protesters also burned an American flag at a mosque after Friday prayers. In western Farah province, police said two people were injured in another protest.

Interesting point, I think maybe it's because we attach a high degree of value to the concept of free speech.
I personally don't agree with your cause and effect statement, I don't believe that they burned our flag because the whack job preacher made them do it. I imagine there are hundreds of such flags burnt daily in far away places like Afghanistan and Pakistan, even not so far away places like Canada (witnessed a flag burning there personally in the mid 80s).
One thing that I find very interesting and troubling is how our media infrastructure made it so easy for someone very clearly on the fringe of political and religious thought to garner enough attention to make this an international incident. That's quite troubling to me in the days of "breaking news."

I wondered about that too coming from a small church of about 50 members. I'd say it has to be a case of a a preacher who proactively made it an international event.Pez wrote:One thing that I find very interesting and troubling is how our media infrastructure made it so easy for someone very clearly on the fringe of political and religious thought to garner enough attention to make this an international incident. The media, and us common folks, love the train wreck stories and vest very little interest in heartwarming stories. That's just how it is.
