Libya - calling a space a spade?
ok... lots of talk about a no-fly zone over Iraq and having the US do it... It was made clear by a US general today that implementing a no-fly zone would first consist of the bombing of Libya to knock out their SAMs.
We should do it, on the condition that they buy new ones from Raytheon... That's saving jobs man.

This is why our military budget is so big. Basically no one else but the US can do it.

Fair enough, but I think it's ludicrous that the American taxpayer is burdened with the worlds problems. The UN needs to open a checking account and pay for it.

The UN is basically broke they couldn't support such a operation monetarily. Nato would just rely on the US so asking them would be pointless. While we may not want to afford it, we are really the only one that can do it.
Just a side note on our military budget. Read on of my military sites the military insurance is 10% of the military budget. I know you had a list on another post of what other countries spend on there military. So we spend on military health care what other countries spend on there entire military.
Health care accounts for nearly 10 percent of the Pentagon's $550 billion budget, and a study released by the Center for American Progress suggests that it is only a matter of time before those costs start diverting funds away from the military's national security missions.

Now this is a private insurance company contracted by the federal government. How's Obama care looking now financially?
Re: Libya - calling a space a spade?
Gaddafi starting to take back ground in Libya due to his Air Force. I honestly think the US is going to blow another chance to get rid of a dictator by just sitting on the sidelines. All the rebels need is a no fly zone to even the playing field.
Re: Libya - calling a space a spade?
Hate to say it, but I think the winner in the Japanese Disaster is Gaddafi. Got him out of the headlines...for now.

Agree... Bahrain is getting pretty dicey... i think the dictator there asked and receieved saudi troops to help quash the rebels there... We could potentially be looking at a larger scale regional conflict.

I think it is a little too late for the no fly zone now.

I think this is a bit more than a no fly zone... the resolution says we can actually attack Gaddafi... The UN cant do much else.

Other than taking out air defenses and keeping the planes & helicopters on the ground I don't see them doing much else.

I'm surprised... The resolution included attack of ground targets as well. It's not as if we can take out air defenses and enforce a no fly zone, then just idly fly around when gaddafi kills thousands with conventional weapons? This is another regime change. I don't know how It can be any other way.
