[Just say] No fly zone...
After some significant thought, I don't think that the United States should have any involvement in enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya. The UN should do it. The argument can be made that the UN is broke, but, well, so is the US.

Problem is the UN will just appoint the US to do it. Really what other country has the capability to do this? You can say NATO but that still just comes back to the US. However, I do think it is time to implement a no fly zone over Libya and time for a little gun running to the rebels. Where is Col. North when you need him?

LOL... If Karl Rove was still around I'm sure he would have Ollie on speed dial.
Someone else has to pay for it... and also, what happens then? What if Gaddafi goes Charlie Sheen and wipes out 10,000 protestors with tanks and machine guns, effectively staying in power... Then he can fly planes again? This has bad idea written all over it. We should not get involved. We have two very striking examples of how regime change is a very long term and costly endeavor.
We cant afford it, we have to say no.
Here's a non-authoritative list of the top 10 air forces:
1. USA - cant afford to do it
2. Russia - wont do it
3. China - wont do it
4. UK - might do it
5. France - likely wont do it
6. India - who knows
7. Germany - who knows
8. R. Korea - wont do it
9. Israel - would love to do it
10. Greece - who knows

Re: [Just say] No fly zone...
Heard England & France were working on the no fly zone. Not sure if it was for the UN or NATO. Only reason France is interested is because Libya was a former French Colony. Hey if someone else pays for it; then definitely a US initiative (good thing for the Air Force & Navy go to congress for justification for the next generation fighter/bombers
)
If Nato does it then Germany & Greece will have to do something to help.
Don't think Israel would care about Libya, but eagerly hoping Iran or Syria is next to be a good neighbor to those freedom fighters.
As far as Gaddafi going bonkers already there. When he starts bombing homes. Need to level the playing field with NATO airpower and supply the freedom fighters, no troops on the ground except to get the delivery signatures on the weapons drop offs.

nods.... France also has a considerable amount of oil interest in Libya (FINA, I think)?
I wonder what the US' standing in the world would be if we refused to have political or economic relations with any nation that didn't provide basic human rights (including the right to elect their own leaders). China, Libya, Venezuela etc etc... Where would China be if we refused their imports (before we became inextricably dependent on them).
