Kentucky KKK group has been ordered to pay $2.5 million in damages

BRANDENBURG, Ky. - A Kentucky-based Ku Klux Klan chapter has been ordered to pay $2.5 million in damages in a judgment that civil rights attorneys hope will bankrupt the local group.

The Southern Poverty Law Centre sued the nation's second-largest Klan outfit on behalf of a Latino teen severely beaten in 2006 by two Klan members. The Klansmen were convicted and served two years in prison.

A jury on Friday ordered the Imperial Klans of America, its leader and two former followers to pay 19-year-old Jordan Gruver $1.5 million for lost wages and medical expenses and $1 million in punitive damages.

The centre claimed the leader incited Klansmen to violence, resulting in the attack on Gruver.

The Klan leader denied the claim, saying his group's not generally violent.

I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or in the entertainment column, the bold line defintely is a corny attempt at a joke.
