RICHMOND, Va. -- Circuit City Stores Inc. is pulling the plug on about 20 per cent of its U.S. stores in an effort to return America's No. 2 consumer electronics retailer to profitability.
The Richmond, Va.-based company said Monday it will shutter 155 of its more than 700 stores in 55 domestic markets by Dec. 31, laying off about 17 per cent of its American workforce - about 7,300 people based on about 43,000 total as of last February.

Reuters) - Bankrupt U.S. home furnishings retailer Linens 'n Things sought to speed up closing its remaining 371 stores and begin its going-out-of-business sales to avoid competition from other retail failures, Bloomberg said.
The company asked Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Sontchi for permission to auction its remaining 371 stores and begin going-out-of-business sales two days later, the news agency reported.

Electronics retailer Circuit City files for Chapter 11 protection
NEW YORK (AP) -- Circuit City Stores has filed for bankruptcy about a week after it said it would close 20 percent of its stores.
The Richmond, Virginia-based electronics retailer has been struggling as nervous consumers spend less and credit has become tighter. It filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday.
Chapter 11 protection typically allows a company to hold off creditors and operate as normal while it develops a financial reorganization plan.
Circuit City says it has more than $1 billion in assets and more than $1 billion in liabilities. Courts do not require companies to provide more specific figures in filings.
The company says it anticipates it would have money to distribute to unsecured creditors, who get paid last.
