Fort Wayne native Jon Fitch meets Georges St. Pierre TONIGHT...
...in a UFC Welterweight Championship match. This should be a GREAT matchup.
Hopefully Fitch can show the MMA world that GSP is NOT unstoppable.

I have never really considered this a sport.

I never really asked you if you did, either.
It's no different than boxing.

My apologies. After reading it, I see that it probably came off as dickish.
I just get defensive when people talk bad about it because 1.) it IS a sport and 2.) it's SOOOOOO different than what it used to be. These are some of the most talented and versed athletes in the world. Gone are the days of 400 pound guy fighting 120 pound guy in a street fight inside the cage. It's MIXED Martial Arts now. A combination of ALL forms of martial arts including, but not limited to, wrestling, jiu jitsu, boxing, muay thai kickboxing, etc. A 1-dimensional slugger will not go far in MMA these days. There are rules. There are time limits now, there are rounds. It's sanctioned by athletic commissions. It's no longer "cage fighting" or "human cockfighting"...it's a sport and people need to realize that. Combat sports ARE sports.

By the way...Jon Fitch lost a 5-round Unanimous Decision to possibly the greatest fighter in mixed martial arts today, Georges St. Pierre. Fitch has one hell of a chin on him and I expect him to fight for the title again at some point.

Well It's no big deal. If it makes you feel better, you can go eat a whole bag of dicks! I was gonna come back with a retaliatory comment but decided I should look into UFC a little more before I did.
I suppose the concept that I had was of years ago and lots of blood. I checked out a couple YouTube clips and I can see there is a lot of structure similar to boxing. Reading the article it also seems like the athletes treat this completely differently than WWF which is the icon of violence that comes to mind. I think the fact that it incorporates mixed martial arts may attribute to the perception of it being more of a brawl when compared to a pure Karate or pure Jiu Jitsu match. The fact that it's on pay-per-view says something about it being too violent for broadcast, which almost every other sport can accomplish.
I can't see this going to the Olympic level yet, but I now see that perhaps one day it may.

MMA is the new boxing, think about it, 20-30 years ago, everyone knew who the heavyweight champion was. Today, does anyone know who the top 1-2 guys are? Really? That use to be THE guy to be, now no one cares.
But, ask people if they know who Chuck Liddel is, and most will have an idea (if they watch much TV anyway). I heard Fitch pretty much got destroyed by St. Pierre in the fight. I think it's kinda odd how the guys on top of a few weights are so ridiculously better than the rest.. St. Pierre and Anderson Silva are the first that come to mind.
I think the UFC made a mistake though in naming their events, because it comes off like WWE. Instead of making it the Fitch/St Pierre fight with so and so and others underlining it, they turn it into UFC 87: Seek and Destroy, so it comes off like Wrestlemania (insert # here). So from a marketing standpoint, I think that hurt, but it also puts the UFC ahead of any single person, kinda like the NFL (as opposed to the NBA).

It actually made it's network TV debut a few months back. CBS will be airing another live event in October (I think?). Give it some time and it'll be all over the place. It (the "new" MMA) is still in it's infant stages, for the most part.meta4 wrote:The fact that it's on pay-per-view says something about it being too violent for broadcast, which almost every other sport can accomplish.

And I agree about being an Olympic event. It will be before long.
And Card...I agree with the naming. Never been a fan. I'm also not a fan of the ring girls or the fighter nicknames, either.

There are some that are definitely better than others, but overall, I don't like them.
Here are some that I can't stand...
Kenny "Ken-Flo" Florian
Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon
"The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock
Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg
Matt "the Terra" Serra
Nick "The Goat" Thompson
Tito "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Ortiz

He's expecting a child with her.
Easiest childbirth EVER? I think so. The kid will probably fall out around the 3 month mark.
